Ad of the Day: Nike’s ‘Unlimited Courage’ film celebrates the achievements of transgender athlete Chris Mosier

The latest iteration of Nike’s ‘Unlimited’ series which stars Chris Mosier, the first transgender athlete to make a US national team, has nabbed The Drum’s Ad of the Day crown.

Produced by Wieden + Kennedy Portland, the brand’s ‘Unlimited Courage’ spot shows Chris training for triathlons and in competition as an unseen narrator asks: “How did you know you’d be fast enough to compete against men, or strong enough?”

“How’d you know the team would accept you? Or that you’d even be allowed to compete?,” the narrator continues.

To each question Mosier replies simply, “I didn’t,” before being asked: “Did you ever want to give up?”

“Yeah,” concedes Mosier, “but I didn’t.”

The film ends on the strapline ‘Unlimited Courage’ – pointing to the sportsman’s determination to become the first openly trans competitor on a US men’s national team.

Debuting during NBC’s primetime Rio 2016 coverage on Monday night (8 August), the campaign is part of Nike’s wider initiative which celebrates the achievements of athletes like Serena Williams.
